The club was started by two former restaurateurs, Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager. Rubell and Schrager had no prior experience in running a nightclub, but they quickly learned how to create a successful business.

The club became known for its strict door policy. Only the most attractive and well-dressed people were allowed inside. This made it difficult for many people to get into the club, but it also added to the allure of Studio 54 strain.

The club was also famous for its drug use. cocaine was rampant at the club, and many of the guests were high on drugs throughout the night. This led to some dangerous situations, but it also added to the excitement of the club.

Studio 54 closed in 1986 after Rubell and Schrager were convicted of tax evasion. 

The club has since been reopened, but it has never regained the same level of popularity as it had in its heyday.
